Munthirivallikal Thalirkkumbol is an upcoming Indian Malayalam family drama film directed by Jibu Jacob and written by Sindhu Raj, loosely based on the Malayalam short story Pranayopanishad by V. J. James. Produced by Sophia Paul under the production house, Weekend Blockbusters, the film stars Mohanlal and Meena, respectively as Panchayat secretary Ulahannan and his wife Annyamma. The soundtrack would feature songs composed by Bijibal and M. Jayachandran, and a film score by Bijibal.
Principal photography commenced on 15 July 2016 in Kozhikode, Kerala. The film is set for a Christmas opening, scheduled to be released on 22 December 2016.
Mohanlal officially announced the untitled film through his Facebook page on 26 June 2015. The film is directed by Jibu Jacob; he made his directoriall debut with Vellimoonga (2014). It is produced by Sophia Paul of Weekend Blockbusters; the screenplay, written by Sindhu Raj, is based on a short story, Pranayopanishad by V. J. James. It is the second time Sindhu Raj is adapting fiction by another writer. Mohanlal plays a Panchayat secretary named Ulahannan.On 9 December 2015, through Facebook, Weekend Blockbusters confirmed the film’s female lead as Meena opposite Mohanlal, playing his wife. In March 2016, more cast and crew was revealed; Biju Menon was confirmed to play a government employee in the film along
with other cast including Nedumudi Venu, Aju Varghese, Suraj Venjaramood, Kalabhavan Shajon, and Sudheer Karamana. M. Jayachandran and Bijibal were selected for composing the music for the film, while Pramod Pillai was chosen as the cinematographer. Writer Sindhu Raj announced in May 2016 that the production will begin in June 2016 right after Mohanlal complete his work in Priyadarshan’s film, Oppam (2016).
In June 2016, Aima Rosmy Sebastian was confirmed to play Ulahannan’s daughter, a class 12 student. Her name came to casting through Aju Varghese, who acted alongside her in her debut film Jacobinte Swargarajyam (2016).In early July 2016, additional cast of Anoop Menon, Alencier Ley Lopez, and Srinda Ashab was confirmed in the film. Biju Menon was replaced by Anoop Menon. Alencier Ley Lopez plays the character who is a neighbour to Ulahannan and family, where they are living in a housing colony.While Anoop Menon plays a government official and close friend of Ulahannan, Srinda Ashab plays a homemaker, wife of Anoop Menon’s character. Their family is also a neighbour of Ulahannan.In early August 2016, actors Rahul Madhav and Neha Saxena was confirmed in the film, with the former in a cameo role as Ulahannan’s brother-in-law and the latter in a crucial role. Saxena plays Julie, an NRI girl who becomes a turning-point in Ulahannan’s life. She was offered the role by Sophia Paul, who recognised her performance in Kasaba. Her portions were shot in 5 days.
